2003

• From October 2003, Chiara Fumai leads the artistic direction of the Lobby Night program at Rocket—a club in via Pezzotti 52, Milan—which she co-organizes together with Marcello Bellan and Chiara Giuliani. In addition to exploring various strands of electronic music and indie rock through live concerts and performances by Italian and international DJs, the evenings are conceived as special events, open to incursions from the fields of visual art and design. Chiara Fumai is also in charge of the Rocket’s graphic design and communication. The club becomes a reference point in Milan’s electronic music scene, thanks to the originality of its programming and the quality of its guests.

2004

• The Lobby Night program at the Rocket club in Milan takes place regularly every other Thursday. The guests include: Miss Kittin, Francisco, Adriano Canzian, DJ 412, Michael Mayer, Alexander Robotnick, Luca Baldini. Chiara Fumai begins to perform DJ sets under the name Dja-vù, or simply Avù:

On the occasion of Milan Design Week, the Rocket transforms into an exhibition space to host design projects by Krv Kurva, Åbäke/Kitsuné, Deluks and the magazine Very Guides. On April 14, the space presents LA.GA D.I.S.C.O., a special edition of the iconic Tyvek bag by the Portuguese brand Krv Kurva, with graphic design by Chiara Fumai. The presentation is followed by DJ sets featuring Lobby Soundsystem and Bebe la Maitresse.

• Impulse Festival, 3rd edition, Beijing, China, May 14–21, 2006, organized by ASEF—Asia Europe Fundation. Program curated by Aleksander Motturi and Leon Lee.

In the context of the international festival, Chiara Fumai performs in two DJ sets at the Tango club in Beijing (May 19–20), under the name Pippi Langstrumpf. She is the first female Italian DJ to play in China.

• Italo old skull terror disco tech, Pippi Langstrumpf (Lobby SS) DJ set with Alice (Phantom Rec), Freak, Via Bertani 16, Milan, Italy, June 2, 2006.

Phantom Records was an art project launched by Alice Cannavà in 2005–06, consisting in the invention of a fictitious record label with accompanying album covers, graphics and texts. Chiara Fumai goes on to adopt the phrase “Phantom Rec” alongside her DJ name in press releases, as though the label were a real one, inaugurating that fusion of reality and fiction characterized most of her work, including in the visual arts.

This exhibition series is a collaborative project between Careof (Milan) and the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa (Venice), consisting in the sharing of a selection of video works by young Italian artists, borrowed from various archives and shown in two different venues. Art intervention signed Pippi Kid in collaboration with William Bottin, realized during Milan Design Week. The project consists in counting the people crossing the porta Genova bridge with a special counter, to reflect on the gradual urbanization of Milan’s Tortona neighborhood. Tortona developed from a prevalently agricultural area at the end of the nineteenth century to an industrial landscape, eventually becoming, over the past few decades, a neighborhood devoted to fashion and design. A video titled Cia Salone’s Transumanza, in which Chiara Fumai/Pippi Kid is dressed up as a sheep, partially documents the intervention.

The exhibition revolves around the fictional character Katie Jane and her diary, recounting her days inside the prison in Hoorn. The diary draws inspiration from the works exhibited, which reflect on the climate of suspicion prevailing at the time, fueled by the fear of terrorist attacks and the widespread diffusion of surveillance systems. Some of the artists then resident at the Oostereiland prison are invited to participate in the project, among them Chiara Fumai, who writes several of the entries in the fictional diary.

Exhibition of works in progress by the students of the 15th Corso Superiore di Arti Visive at the Fondazione Ratti in Como. Conceived as a day of discussion between artists and audiences, interspersed with a series of studio visits, the presentation is organized within the framework of Walid Raad’s workshop at the CSAV—Artists’ Research Laboratory. For her presentation, Chiara Fumai exhibites the piece realized during her residency at the Hoorn prison the previous year, reactivating it with a performative action. The artist returns to manually weaving the rope of clothes used for the prison escape documented in the video, metaphorically linking to the idea of escape and its narration.

Presented for the first time on the opening night of dOCUMENTA(13) on June 9, 2012, Shut Up, Actually Talk (The World Will Not Explode) takes place on the roof of the Fridericianum and on the square behind the museum, and is repeated on September 16, 2012. Six performers plays Zalumma Agra and the “Stars of the East,” speaking into a megaphone writings by Carla Lonzi taken from the English translation of “Sputiamo su Hegel” (“Let’s Spit on Hegel,” 1970) and from the Rivolta Femminile manifesto “Io dico Io” (“I Say I,” 1977), amid flashes of fire. The performances of The Prodigy of Nature (with the bearded woman Annie Jones) and Shut Up, Actually Talk (with Zalumma Agra and words from the Rivolta Femminile manifesto “I Say I”) are staged weekly during the hundred days of the exhibition, within the spaces of The Moral Exhibition House. The latter is an inhabitable structure inspired by a pseudoscientific museum, its architecture modeled on the Fox sisters’ cottage in Lily Dale (New York), which was destroyed by a fire in 1955.

The project is conceived as a long symposium bringing together a group of artists with similar practices. The group is involved in activities ranging from mushroom picking to walks and meditation, and encouraged to participate in collective actions. During the residency, Chiara Fumai presents a Chaos Mass: the ritual invocation takes place in a room prepared with herbs and various materials arranged in specific patterns, while the words spoken during the ritual are transcribed, in Fumai’s characteristic automatic writing, on the interior walls of Villa Kadenówka. She also collaborates with Micki Pellerano—as master of ceremonies—on the performance The Tree of Life and the workshop The Secrets of Sigilization. Presented on the occasion of the “open house,” a moment of opening to and sharing with the public, the workshop teaches visitors how to make their own seals following the Chaos magic method elaborated by the English occultist and artist Austin Osman Spare at the turn of the twentieth century.

For this edition of the project, Chiara Fumai makes a work remotely, in collaboration with Leonardo Remor. Succubae Invocation is a contemporary variation on a witchcraft ritual in vogue during the nineteenth century, a method of influencing another person’s dreams by invoking Lilith and using her symbolism. For the public presentation of Mycorial Theatre, the complex ritual is reduced to a few essential elements: a black candle lit on both ends and balanced on a salt crystal, placed in three points on the floor of the exhibition space to form a triangle.
